LGBT rights undone in NC

The state has undone all LGBT nondiscrimination provisions across the state. Before the law was passed local laws could be passed to protect LGBT rights.

This means that people in North Carolina can now be fired from their jobs for being gay, turned away at hotel chains for being gay, and even forced to show their genitals to a police officer if the cop thinks they might be transgender.

It is hard to believe that legislation which protects LGBT rights can be so scary to some. But if we think that this is the same state that since 2012 is denying climate change it is not as surprising. It is very sad nonetheless.

What makes me happy though is to I read that there are people in powerful positions who are doing what they can to protest such a rotten law. San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee is barring public funding for city employees’ travel to North Carolina in protest of the state’s new law.

We are standing united as San Franciscans to condemn North Carolina’s new discriminatory law that turns back the clock on protecting the rights of all Americans including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals,” Lee said in a Friday statement announcing the ban…

With other states like Georgia on the verge of passing more discriminatory laws, let me be clear that San Francisco taxpayers will not subsidize legally-sanctioned discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in any City or State (read more).
